Park City Sweeps Area Contest
Stacy Dymalski and Cathy Barker represented Park City at the Area International and Table Topics Contests and both came away with a 1st place award. Both will go on to compete at the Division D speech contests in April.
Stacy gave her most heart-felt rendition of Wynton Marsalis Has My Back. She talked with lots of animation about how an unexpected encounter with Wynton allowed a perfect stranger to help direct her son’s future. When she sat down she noticed someone in the audience with tears and she proceeded to lose it herself. Her son, the topic of her speech, was in the audience to hear his mom give this speech.
Cathy, along with the other Table Topics contestants, were given an odd object to describe and tell the audience what it is used for. This is spontaneity at its best – the speakers must speak at least one minute and no more than two and half minutes. Cathy came out with an immediate answer and proceeded to get more and more excited about her idea and the audience ate up her enthusiasm. It was like were were on the shopping channel.
Way to go Stacy and Cathy!
Stacy Dymalski Wins the Club International Speech Contest
Every year each Toastmaster Club holds four speech contests, two in the Spring and two in the Fall. On February 21, 2012, the Park City Toastmasters Club held an international speech contest. The winner of this contest goes on to the Area contest, the Area winner goes on to Division, from Division to District, from District to Regionals, from Regionals to International. If you win the international speech contest there is a good chance you could have an instant new career in public speaking.
There were four contestants and one ‘warm up’ speaker (for the judges). Bill Kahn volunteered to be the ‘warm up’ speaker and gave a great speech on how weight training is the new ‘fountain of youth’. The other contestants were Julio Garreaud, John Concannon, David Wintzer, and Stacy Dymalski.
Julio came in 3rd place, David in 2nd, and Stacy took 1st place. Stacy will go on to compete at the Area contest on Saturday, March 24th, at the Utah Olympic Park. Three other clubs are in our Area so she could face three other competitors. The Table Topics (spontaneous speaking) contest will also be held on March 24th.
