Outgoing president Julio Garraeud Roasted & Awards are presented
Club officials created a new tradition - roast the outgoing president at a summer dinner party and give out club awards and recognition. On the evening June 24, 2010, Julio was duly roasted. Lynn led a very funny skit depicting Julio refusing to coach executives who wore poor chooz (shoes). That was followed by several members acting out and exaggerating the different phases and interests of Julio's life (military, medic, cyclist, coach, rv owner, etc.). Finally, Julio was recognized and honored for his achievements and skills with a Toast.
After Julio's roast, time was taken to highlight the achievements of the club and its members during the last year, which were many. Two awards were created and presented - the 'Jon Henry Toastmaster of the Year Award' which was presented to its first recipient, Jon Henry, and the 'Rookie of the Year Award' which was given to Andy Cier. Finally, toasts were given to departing club founder Jon Henry.

Toast To Toastmasters
Two locals take top honors at highest regional competition

The Park City Toastmasters Club is basking in its recently obtained bragging rights after two members, Jon Henry and Andy Cier, won top honors at a multi-state competition last weekend. Toastmasters International is a service-oriented organization that promotes the development of public speaking and community leadership, explained Park City president Julio Garreaud.
Every quarter clubs hold competitions and send their best to regionals. After rising through the ranks of Salt Lake area tournaments, Henry and Cier competed against regional champions in all of Utah, southern Idaho, eastern Oregon, parts of Nevada and western Wyoming.
Henry won in a category focused on the evaluation of others' speeches and Cier won with a humorous or entertaining speech he wrote himself.
Henry has been successful in past competitions, but Cier is a fairly new member of the club, Garreaud said.
Last year's president Lynn Ware Peek was awarded President of the Year.
Members are encouraged to complete speaking tasks outlined in a manual, he explained. Doing so is intended to improve people's personal abilities while also giving them opportunities to help others and contribute to the community. To reward participation, various prestigious ranks can be achieved in the organization, Garreaud said.
The Park City club meets every Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. in the Sheldon Richins building at Kimball Junction.
It's typical for a club to boast seven to 10 members, he said. But in Park

City there are 40 official members and the early-morning meetings average an attendance exceeding 20. Gerreaud said he loves the camaraderie and stays the entire time sometimes after 8:30, and then will even get coffee with members who don't have to run.
"People are so passionate about Toastmasters, but here they're also passionate about what they do in life," he said. "We have an extraordinary brotherhood, if you want to call it that it speaks highly of the quality of people in Park City."
Garreaud said he's a big fan of the Toastmasters program. Before becoming president back in July, he had started two chapters in Salt Lake City one of them for Hispanics that encouraged better communication in English.
"We live in a new era socially, politically and economically. I think it's very, very fundamental that we're able to communicate in a way that's compelling," he explained.
At his job, Garreaud said he does a lot of business coaching. He said he always encourages people to tell a compelling story about themselves and about the business they're promoting.
A quick survey of all the most influential CEO's in America will reveal that all are compelling speakers who can inspire employees to adopt the company's goals and missions.
"In order to rise and live more powerfully, we must speak well," he added.
Park City Wins at District
Lynn Ware-Peek (and co-president, John Concannon) win Best Club President. Andy Cier wins District Humorous Speech Contest and Jon Henry wins District Evaluation Contest. Park City sweeps the District 15 Contests!

International & Table Topics Speech Contest Club Winners
On February 24th, 2009 our club conducted the International Speech Contest. 3rd place was Carlie Judd, 2nd place was Julio Garreaud, and 1st place was Jon Henry. Jon will go to compete in the Area Contest.
On March 5th, our Table Topics contest was held at the Park City Roaster from 6:30-8:30pm. 1st place was Dennis Hough,
2nd place was John Concannon, and
3rd place was Mark Seltenrich.
Assuming the Area contest is on Saturday, March 21st, Dennis will not be able to attend. So John will proceed to the Area contest with Mark as the Alternate.
It was an enjoyable contest. Lots of food. PC Roaster was a great place for it. Rob, the co-owner, let us station contestants in the office so they couldn't overhear the responses and question.
Judging was a very good experience; every member should be a judge - it is hard and a strong learning experience.
All three judges gave feedback to every contestant after the contest was over - which the contestants really appreciated.
Missy video recorded the contestants and will post the videos on Facebook.
We had EIGHT contestants, one timer, and three judges.
Everyone was encouraged to attend the Area, Division, and District contests.

Mike Hodge wins District 15 Humorous Speech Contest
Please join me in congratulating the District 15 2008 Fall Humorous Contest winner Mike Hodge, representing Division D. Mike went up against four tough competitors on Saturday night at the District 15 Fall Conference in Idaho Falls. His humorous tale of mix-ups and mistaken identities with a cell phone and an airline flight trying to leave on schedule had the crowd in an uproar.
Way to make us (and yourself) proud, Mike!

In the Harry Potter series, boggarts are shape-shifting creatures that take the form of a person's worst fear. The only defense is to turn them into something funny and laugh at it. Far away from Hogwarts, the Park City chapter of Toastmasters has been conquering one of the biggest boggarts of all, fear of public speaking, with humorous story-telling.
Jon Henry and Mike Hodge, members of the Park City chapter, won the tall tale speech and humorous speech divisions respectively last month at a Salt Lake City contest of Toastmasters International chapters. They now move on to a statewide contest Oct. 18.
Humorous story-telling is a tradition at the autumn contests and the local chapter likes to compete to sharpen their skills. "It forces you to go up to the next level and compete with people you don't know and aren't familiar with. It raises the bar, forces you to work a little harder and make this even better. That's enjoyable," he said.
Self-improvement is the goal of Toastmasters. A non-profit association dedicated to promoting a friendly and supportive atmosphere to improve public speaking and leadership skills, Henry finds it a great place to rid himself of bad communication habits. But Henry is no stranger to public speaking. He used to be a pastor and was a member of the Park City Storytellers Guild.
John Concannon, co-president with Lynn Ware Peek, said a little more than half of the club's 25 members have a fear of public speaking and want to improve,
and the others find it a great place to practice and polish their existing skills. Those with a fear of public speaking are not few in number. A frequently cited statistic places public speaking as Americans' worst fear above even death. Toastmasters provides an atmosphere in which there is no fear of failure or looking stupid, he said.
Lynn Ware Peek said she'd been out of the professional world for a while after having kids and being a stay-at-home mom. "I wanted to get my words back," she said. "At first I was intimidated, I thought they'd all be professional speakers not true. Three and a half years now, it's something I'm addicted to."
Concannon came to a meeting with a friend and saw it was something he wanted to do. He said it took a while for him to dedicate the time to attending meetings, but has since found it to help him in all the ways he communicates. Everyone is faced with public speaking, whether it's with people familiar or strangers, he said. Even leaving a voice message requires someone to speak calmly and coherently to get their meaning across. "We're not all perfect, which is great. It puts a human face on people failing and making mistakes in a nice friendly atmosphere improving on their skill sets," Concannon said. His membership has also changed how he listens to candidates this election year, he said. He can now identify effective techniques used in speeches and debates, and he works on emulating them at the meetings.
Another aspect of membership he appreciates is the creative outlet. Everyone must write their own speech, and it provides an opportunity for self-expression and outside-the-box thinking that isn't always present in workplaces, he said.
Henry used a character, Sven from Norway, to tell his award-winning "tall tale." Living in Tollgate Canyon and experiencing a lot of strange things in a neighborhood so high up, underdeveloped and snow-laden, he used some truth and a lot of exaggeration to create his speech, he said.
The club is holding an open-house on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Sheldon D. Richins Building in Kimball Junction at the normal meeting time of 7 a.m. to 8.
Park City sweeps Area 3 contest
On Saturday, September 18th, Mike Hodge and Jon Henry swept the Area 3 speech contests. Mike won the humorous speech

Fall 2008 Club Speech Contest
The Fall contest has two tracks, humorous and tall tales. Marty Spear and Mike Hodge competed in the humorous contest and John Concannon and Jon Henry competed in the tall tale contest. Mike Hodge won the humorous and Jon Henry won the tall tale contest. Congratulations! They will now go on to compete at the area contest on September 27th.
Spring 2008 Dinner Party
Our Spring Dinner Party was hosted by Cate Brabson. The food had a Utah produce theme to it and, as always, was delicious. Several guests joined us and about twenty five were in attendance. Jon Henry gave a speech on "Bucket #2" and Julio Garreuad gave a speech on "Being Drafted". Lily Cox led a round a well prepared Table Topics.
November 2007 Dinner Party
Yet another wonderful dinner party was hosted by the Eaton's this year. Our theme was "wild west'. John Concannon gave a story about Buth Cassidy, Lynn Ware Peek gave a speech about a recent airplane trip, and Ken Fisher spoke about his skipping a day of high school to greet the recently victorious Boston Celtics at the air port. Cate Brabson completed our time with a fun round of table topics. The food was wonderful as was the entertainment! Click on the image to view more photos.

Toastmasters District 15 Contest!
Got Word?
We Toastmasters are notorious word enthusiasts! At every meeting we use the “Word of the Day” as often as possible. In an entertaining twist, Park City challenged each other to a “Non Word of the day” contest, inspired by the new online site, www.addictionary.org. Member Ken Fisher came up with the winning word “momopoly”, a large gathering of women that talk excessively about their children. The contest was highly entertaining and drove membership to a new level (several guests signed up that day). See attached photos of the winner and the club.
In the spirit of spring competition, Park City is challenging all District 15 members to beat “momopoly”. The person with the winning non-word will win t-shirts with their non-word on it for everyone in their club and a series of special surprises at the District 15 Conference in Salt Lake City in May.
The contest runs from March 2 - April 2, 2007 on www.addictionary.org. Winners will be chosen by the District 15 Executive Team. There will be plenty of photo and PR opportunities for your club nationally at the conference and will be used as a challenge to all the Regions in May. The Addictionary has already received press for similar community contests in the Wall St. Journal and has become a category on the NPR Word Play Show “Says You!” Your word -- if it wins -- will be submitted and could air on an upcoming taping of Says You! (Says You! has a reach of 700k listeners!)
Non-word challenge
At our Fall Dinner Party, Robin Rankin presented our club with a unique challenge: ADDICTIONARY NON-Word of the Day Challenge (Open to all PC TM club members and their families). How to Play: * Each member of Park City Toastmasters Club OR their family members are eligible to dream up a word they think perhaps should be in the English language, but isn't. You can enter as many times as you like.
* Enter your submissions at http://www.addictionary.org
* Make sure you follow the instructions on how to register and enter your word. Very important!
* Come Monday afternoon, November 13th, all submissions must be received.
* The compilation of submissions will be revealed at our meeting Tuesday, November 14th; and at that meeting each Toastmasters member will vote by secret ballot for their two (2) favorite entries (but *cannot* vote for their own).
* Winner will be announced at our next Toastmasters meeting Tuesday, November 21st.
Prize: Winner will have their Non-Word and Definition memorialized on t-shirts, one of which every member of the club will receive. Every member of the Club must wear their t-shirt at that November 21st meeting; and the winner’s non-word will be used as the official Word of the Day that day. Deadline for NonWord Submission: Monday, Nov. 13, 2006 at 5pm
NOW: You voted, he swept it. Congratulations to our very own clever Ken Fisher who crushed the NON WORD CHALLENGE today with his hysterically funny word...Momopoly (noun) - A large gathering of moms that talk excessively about their children. Momopoly made the official non word of the day on www.addictionary.org. The photos are of his victory lap and the winner's circle compliments of the FANTABULOUS Brenda Hall.
Robin wil send the group photo in to District 15's newsletter to offer a challenge to the other clubs to beat the Park City Toastmaster's official choice in a word-play challenge. They have their work cut out for them! Lynn brought a guest today who is planning on calling NPR to see if he can get us a mention on the radio show about language "In Your Words". Robin thinks TM Mag will be very interested to cover what is going on in our little club!
Special mention to the runners-up: Jon Henry (accepting for his daughter) - magnifiscent; Lynn - hippotonia; Brenda - fantabulous; Ken again - leisureologist. Thanks from Robin again for playing - it was so much fun to duke it out online with fellow word afficionados! return to top
